A brief selection of typical projects from our hundreds of installations in most commercial sectors.

THE SAVOY GRILL Chef’s Kitchen – Gordon Ramsey

Project scope:
The Chef’s kitchen at the Savoy Grill is part of a display area open to select diners to watch their food being prepared and served directly. Consequently, the refurbishment had to achieve the highest aesthetic standards as well as comply with the exacting needs of a high-quality commercial kitchen. The facility included a main cooking area, servery, preparation and storage rooms, and a wash-up area. These were to be developed from old premises in a bad state of disrepair requiring considerable clearance and preliminary surface preparation.

Materials and techniques:
Rapid turnaround was required so an installation team was deployed overnight. All wall surfaces were clad with 2.5mm white PVC bonded directly onto the original old tiled surfaces. These were first prepared and degreased. The base of the cladding was transitioned to the existing floor skirting tiles. Stainless steel heat shields were adhered in line with all extraction hoods and locked into the PVC cladding to produce hygienic joints. All transitions were finished with silicon sealants.

DELIVERANCE Home Delivery Catering – Central Production Unit,  London

Project scope:
This rapidly developing company provides a high-quality home food delivery service across London. A newly built shell was converted into a customized, drive-in CPU (Central Production Unit) for everything from gourmet food to pizza. Orders are prepared, packed, and dispatched within minutes by chefs and support staff working in ultra-modern and hygienic surroundings. We undertook most of the interior fitting including drainage gullies, safety flooring, electrics, plumbing, stud walls clad with PVC and stainless steel, ceilings, and paint finishes.

HARVEY NICHOLS Catering Facilities – Edinburgh & Manchester Shops

Project scope:
Consistent with the quality values of this organisation, the kitchens and their in-store restaurants required fitting out to the highest possible specification.

Materials and techniques:
Heavy duty, heat resistant (to 80ºC), fiberglass reinforced wall cladding was used throughout. This was supplemented with stainless steel panels behind all cooking equipment edged with transition strips allowing for expansion. Cladding was locked into coved resin flooring with jointing strips for a waterproof transition. Silicon sealant was applied to all joints for extra strength

ROYAL ASCOT RACECOURSE Catering Facilities

Project scope:
As part of the £110m new Royal Ascot Stand refurbishment, we installed interior cladding for the various catering facilities including kitchens, washrooms and offices. This involved coordinating with several other contractors including Lang O’rouke, ISG & Boats as well as liaising with the Architects.<div>

STANLEY LEISURE Catering Facilities for 22 Casinos

Project scope:
Following our treatment of the catering facilities for one of the first Stanley Casinos we were asked to complete similar installations for a further 25 across the UK.

EDISON POWER STATION – Kitchen facilities for CHR Catering Company

Project scope:
Wall, floor, and ceiling installations for a kitchen refurbishment including:

  • Wash-up areas
  • Preparation areas (meat, fish, veg.)
  • Food storage areas
  • Waste and waste-holding areas

Compliancy with “food poisoning prevention” measurements is just one of the many regulations outlined by the Health and Safety authorities that hygienic kitchen design and installation for the catering, food & drink sector has to offer.

Materials and techniques:
With the added consideration of longevity and ease of maintenance, we advised replacing the tiled kitchen floor with a hard-wearing 2.5mm non-slip vinyl safety flooring. The walls were lined with 2.5mm PVC (white) sheets that stopped short at 150mm from the floor where transitional strips were fitted to receive the upwardly coved safety flooring. On the kitchen side behind the cooking range, stainless steel was adhered and locked in with PVC at 200mm on either side. All transitions were finished with silicon sealants.

HOLLINGWORTH HIGH SCHOOL – Sports facility – Rochdale, UK

Project scope:
The new sports facilities installed for Hollingworth High School are for both public and private use. Within the overall context of an education project, the hygienic installations of the shower rooms, changing areas, and toilets were all in so-called “barefoot wet” areas. Particular attention was to be paid to safety, low maintenance, and long life.

Materials and techniques:
On our recommendation, the floors were fitted with non-slip “studded” safety flooring covered 100mm where the PVC walling system dropped down 50mm past the finished covered height and sealed. The flooring was dressed into a trap gully system and sealed. For walling, white PVC was adhered onto concrete block where all corners were thermo-formed with stainless steel corner protectors adhered to all external corners and sealed.

CHRISTIES HOSPITAL – Mortuary and Office Complex – NHS Cancer Trust,  Manchester

Project scope:
The construction of the mortuary was funded as part of the LINAC particle accelerator project. We were contracted to undertake wall and floor installations for two refurbished rooms and one newly constructed building. Both the offices and mortuary are typical medical areas with extra specialised drainage channels. This is reflected in the product selection in particular by the recommendation of a graded resin flooring installation.

Materials and techniques:
The resin was applied throughout such that the floors coved up 100mm into the PVC walling. Fixed stainless steel trims were added to lock the floor in with sealed channels running along either side of the mortuary for the drainage of irregular liquids into special tanks. Walls were pastel PVC adhered onto “British Gypsum Hard” plaster allowing for expansion towards the stainless steel trim. To complete it silicon sealants were applied.

Refurbished Shower Rooms:
Within the overall context of a medical project, the shower rooms were installed in a so-called “barefoot wet” area.  Products specifically for heavy usage wet areas were recommended. The floors were fitted with non-slip safety flooring ‘marine’ 2mm, coved up the wall 100mm, before the 2.5mm PVC Semi Rigid Sheet was adhered to the plastered wall, dropping 50mm below the finished cove and sealed.

In each shower cubicle the vinyl was locked and sealed into a trap gully system with falls, forming a completely watertight system that will last for years to come. Onto the shower rooms’ ceilings, tongue-&-groove PVC ceiling planks are screwed and sealed to a MF ceiling grid. Due to constant steam and condensation levels within this environment, the T&G ceiling plank is the perfect solution to keep moisture away from all substrates.

BALLAMONA HOSPITAL (Strang, Isle of Man) – Bovis Lend Lease Kitchen Facilities

Project scope:
Wall, floor, and ceiling installations for newly built kitchens and associated:

  1. Wash-up areas
  2. Preparation areas (meat, fish, veg.)
  3. Food storage areas
  4. Trolley wash areas
  5. Waste and waste holding areas

Within the overall context of a medical project,  these were “mixed foot heavy traffic wet” areas with a capacity of more than 400 meals a day. With this usage and the client’s explicit need for longevity, we advised alternatives to tiles, which must be re-grouted every 3 years to avoid hairlines and cracks that harbour bacteria that turn tiles into infection hazards.

Materials and techniques:
The floors were fitted with heavy-duty 3mm safety flooring coved 150mm into the PVC walling. A trap gully system was fitted and the welded joints of the gully-floor-wall transitions were protected with transition strips. In preparation, the block walls were chased and skimmed with a mixture of sand, cement and lime then left to dry before a white 2.5mm PVC was adhered onto the blocks and pillars, coved into thermoformed corners complete with silicon joints.

In the food preparation areas, stainless steel walling was formed to specification around the cooking ranges and in all areas, waterproof sockets and light switches were fitted. To complete, silicon sealants were applied.

IKEA –  Croydon Heavy traffic flooring

Project scope:
After many years and millions of customer visits this, the original IKEA store in the UK, needed to be briefly closed for a full refurbishment. We were asked to install new PVC wall cladding throughout the kitchen, preparation, storage, and wash-up areas. We also laid new heavy-duty flooring in the main entrance and waiting areas.

ASDA SUPERMARKETS – Catering Facilities

Project scope:
As part of the ‘George’ clothing boutiques within a number of this major supermarket’s main stores specifically serving and washing.

ESURE INSURANCE – Reception & Catering Facilities

Project scope:
The interior finishes for the reception areas of this insurance company’s Manchester offices were particularly notable for their use of corporate colours.  Their design was executed in ‘Nightfall Blue’ PVC from the PVCWalls colour range to great effect. We also lined their main kitchen and associated areas with standard white walling and stainless steel to the usual safety and hygiene standards.
